Use of Mathematics in Web Design

Web design contains many vital aspects. But deciding on the appropriateness of the web page layout has its own significance. It is the hardest part of web design that includes how various page elements will utilize the available page space effectively so that they can be organized in the best possible manner. You need to take care of possible position, height, width and many other things while designing a layout. Many web designers take the help of a white board or graphics program to design a layout that looks good to them. Apart from that, designers also look for some scientific means to perform this task efficiently. The use of mathematics in web design has taken the design to a new level.

There is a mathematical technique called golden ratio that involves a golden rectangle. You can divide a golden rectangle into a square and a smaller rectangle. Here you need take care of a ratio. The ratio of the width of the small rectangle to the width of the square is equal to the ratio of that width of the square to the big rectangle. Actually, when the golden rectangle is divided into a square and a small rectangle, then that smaller rectangle can also called a golden rectangle.

The most burning example of the golden ratio can be found in the form of a nautilus shell. The shell is full of spirals. You can notice an important thing in the structure of these spirals. These spirals keep reducing in the same proportion with one another and go on to form the whole. You can also come across this ratio arrangement in sunflower petals and the curving of fern fronds.

The term ‘golden ratio’ has so many names to its credit like the golden rectangle, the golden mean or the divine proportion. The use of this technique can be dated back to hundred of years to build a design that is visually beautiful and satisfying for most people. The golden ratio is represented visually with the help of a number called ‘phi’ (1.62 rounded). This number also has its ancient use and is still practiced in architecture and design.

The golden ratio is based on simplicity and when it is used for design, it adopts an approach of building on a natural language which our brain is accustomed with. The ‘phi’ also makes everything very comfortable. Once you get acquainted with this technique, you will find it enjoyable and attractive. Most of the time, you will come across effective and visually appealing designs by using this.

The process of creating web designs with the help of the golden ratio is quite easy and simple. You can generate layouts using the golden ratio by knowing the fixed or flexible widths. To use this ratio, you must always have a number. Once you have the information about the width, you can divide the width by ‘phi’ The end result must be a whole number as whole numbers are preferred by web browsers. So you get the width of the main column in this step. You can calculate the width of the second column by subtracting the main column width from the entire width.
