The first rule in web site designing is not to make your pages turn out to be television channels! Keep their sizes as small as possible; this will make up for a quicker downloads. You cannot keep your viewers waiting since they wouldn’t mind switching to other sites. So if you want viewers to consider your page, just remember that speed is the key to drag them over.
Now here is an important rule in your design: be sure that you have a 28.8 connection speed. Try holding your breath while opening your site. If you gasp for air even before it opens, then it means you have to cut down the size of your site. It is greatly suggested that web designs should not go more than 50k in size; and to make it easier to download, it is advised to have your pages designed in less than a 30k size. A good example would be Yahoo which only uses 20k for faster download.
The question is, how do you set up your sites in order for them to be 30k to 50k in sizes? Well, your graphics should be as small as possible. Having 4k to 6k graphics are acceptable; but going beyond these sizes is quite questionable. Solid colors are also to be used in you pages. Photoshop would also be a great tool to use in the graphics design. It works well in emphasizing or in fading things in your illustration. However, the sizes that it brings reach 8k to 12k which is not worth the space. The only problem you’ll encounter using this gradient is its dithering and use of complex colors.
Remember, the important thing is the design itself and not those pictures. One or two images would be helpful in a page; but putting them all together is quite inconvenient. Keep in mind that the downloading time is what you have to beat in web page designing. There is truism in these tips and your experience will also tell you that it is the right thing to do.
