Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) – a brief history

There’s history behind all things that exist in the world. We talk to our young ones about our good old days, which is history, am I rite? Similarly, Cascading Style Sheets has a history of its own.
Let me give a brief introduction about Cascading Style Sheets before I tell you about its history. Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language and is very important in web development as they help in describing the presentation of a document that is written in a markup language like HTML, XHTML, XML, SVG and XUL.

Styling sheets came into existence in the early 70’s. They were developed mainly for providing or creating a steady and reliable approach for the style information in the web pages, which include formatting of the main title, sub titles, paragraphs etc. With the growth of HTML, there was an increase for web developers and control over the appearance of the site also grew. Cascading HTML Style Sheets (CHSS) and Stream-based Style Sheet Proposal (SSP) were chosen by W3C. Wium Lie and Bert Boss came together to develop Cascading Style Sheets, which is a combination of the two styling sheet languages chosen by W3C.In the year 1996, Internet Explorer 3 had limited support for CSS. However, it was in March 2000, full implementation of CSS was made possible.
