Always use a clean background for your website. I always prefer white background as it highlights my main website in a big way. Next big things is to make sure the font style of your text is perfect. Use fonts that are easy to read and make sure the text size is perfect. Do not use too big font sizes or even too small.

I was following most of them however ensuring the website looks fine in all broswer and also using right screen resolutoins was great.

After verifying my website in different browser I found that it was looking all messed up in Fire Fox. I somehow got it fixed with the help of my designer. Thanks so much for the advice else I would have been missing traffic from Fire fox users.
